Kilchoman is a truly wonderful property! If you are looking for self-catering accommodation on Islay
and want to experience some Islay history then this house is for you. This traditional house gives a small taste of what life used to be like on Islay nearly two hundred years ago, however, we have now added all the comforts of modern living. Set in 37 acres of sheltered farm and hill land, it has its own walled garden and is bounded by our own fields making for an unforgettable holiday on Islay.
In recent times it has been a happy family home that combines a sense of history with modern island life. It now comfortably sleeps ten people for a peaceful country retreat.
Our stunning Georgian house…
The Georgian house was built in 1825 and stands in a sheltered hollow with a burn running through the garden. Originally the manse for Kilchoman Church which stands at the top of the hill, it was sold as a private home in the 1930s. It is thought to be built on the site of the former summer palace of the MacDonalds and incorporates substantial public rooms with a formal Dining Room seating up to 18 and a large south-west facing sitting room overlooking Creag Mhor. There is also a Family/Sitting Room which has freeview TV (also in the main Sitting Room), WiFi and several fun games. The house has some interesting furniture with largely period furnishings in a nod to the grand history of this charming property.
Luxury Accommodation that sleeps up to 12 people…
Kilchoman House has an extensive, newly refurbished kitchen, seating ten for breakfast or lunch. The kitchen includes a dishwasher, fridge freezer, microwave, washing machine, tumble dryer and a pulley to dry your wet clothes after splashing about on the beach. The area is a magnet for birds and many can be seen from the kitchen windows creating a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere.
Upstairs there are five luxury double bedrooms, two with four-poster beds, two twin rooms with Mahogany single beds and a luxury bunk bedroom. Furthermore, there is a luxury bunk bedroom on the ground floor. The house can sleep 12 in total and cottages can be added if greater numbers are required. All rooms share views over the surrounding hills and grounds for a peaceful night’s rest. Three rooms have en-suite shower rooms, whilst one twin room and the bunk bedroom share a family bathroom.
Suitable for a number of occasions…
The house is suitable for a number of occasions. For families enjoying a getaway together, you will never feel under each other’s feet and in just a twenty-minute walk or five-minute drive, you will be on your own secluded beach area. If you become tired of Machir Bay, there are many others to explore nearby. The grounds of the house provide a safe place for children to play and create their own adventures as their imaginations run wild. There is also a separate TV room where you can enjoy an evening movie together.
For big groups, you will love the spacious rooms and the opportunity to use the formal dining room to bring everyone together in the evening.
If you have big plans for a Scottish holiday on Islay, the house could be combined with nearby cottages allowing a party of up to 34 to stay together, using the main house as a base.
